Twice a year we are reminded to “spring forward” and “fall back” for Daylight Saving Time. It is also a great time to remember to check some important home safety and maintenance items around the house:
- Check and replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
If you are a Costco member, I saw a coupon for $3 off an 8-pack of 9-volt batteries – so stock up on them! And if you don’t have carbon monoxide detectors, now would be a great time to install some!
- Check (or create) your emergency kits.
While you’re checking batteries, how are your flashlights? Where are your flashlights? Are you prepared for a power outage in the event of a winter storm?
- Change your furnace filters.
As the weather gets colder, your furnace is going to be running more often. A dirty filter restricts air flow and costs you money – as well as wear and tear on your furnace. You should be changing filters every 2-3 months.
- Reverse your ceiling fans.
Do your ceiling fans have a switch to change direction? You want to reverse them to circulate warm air from the top of the room, rather than blowing cool air onto you.
